Poland Acquires First Strike Capability To Pose Threat To Russia

Posted: 09 Jan 2017 01:00 AM PST

Submitted by Peter Korzun via Strategic-Culture.org,

It should be noted that quite often the most interesting arms contracts escape media attention. That’s how it was in 2016.

Signing a multi-billion-dollar military aid package between the United States and Israel and the subsequent White House approval for long-awaited fighter sales to the Middle East hit the radar screen.

In late September, the US approved the sales of Boeing fighters worth a total of around $7 billion to Kuwait and Qatar. First mooted around two years ago, the deals had been held up by the US government due to Israeli concerns and in order to smooth the way for nuclear talks with Iran.

The same month, a $38-billion Israeli arms package over the next 10 years - the largest of its kind ever – was finalized and signed.

The news about those contacts was a real scoop hitting the headlines of all mainstream media outlets. In late November, the State Department approved another transaction- the acquisition of 70 AGM-158B JASSM-ER (extended range) missiles for Poland. The deal undeservedly failed to attract much attention. In fact, it matters much and changes a lot.

The prospects for the acquisition of the extended range version were discussed as far back as 2014. The US obviously procrastinated due to political considerations. The decision to make the deal go through makes Poland the first state outside the United States to acquire the JASSM-ER.

In 2014, Poland signed a contract to procure the JASSM AGM-158A version for its F-16C/D jets. The stealth missile is designed to destroy ground targets at distances 370+km (230 mi). As of 2014, the JASSM had also entered service in Australia and Finland.

The 370 km is a great range for the purpose of self-defense. But Poland badly wanted strategic conventional first strike capability. With the JASSM-ER deal reached, its dream has come true. Using a more efficient engine and larger fuel volume in an airframe with the same external dimensions as the JASSM, the JASSM-ER has an operational range of 1000+km (620 mi) – an effective stealth weapon to knock out key stationary infrastructure sites located deep in Russia’s territory. The weapon boasts a penetrating warhead.

With the AGM-158A expected to become fully operational this year, Poland has the aircraft and crews ready to receive the extended range version. The JASSM-ER has 70% hardware commonality and 95% software commonality with the original AGM-158 JASSM.

Poland has made a significant contribution into NATO’s long-range conventional superiority to further complicate the prospects for further progress in the field of arms control. The first strike capability presupposes that Russia would introduce corresponding changes into its military planning. The home bases of Polish F-16 fighters carrying the JASSM-ER will inevitably become potential first strike targets in case of conflict with Russia.

The study of defense contracts signed recently by the United States with other countries shows that potential threats to Russia are growing. For instance, an A/N FPS-132 Block 5 Early Warning Radar (EWR) with an operational range of 5,000 km is to be installed in Qatar. Described as ordinary arms sales, the deals are kept out of arms control discourse and public spotlight but putting together bits of information allows to compose the whole picture and identify the creeping menaces.

It’s not air-to surface first strike capability only. Poland has been implementing the plans to form a 50,000 strong paramilitary territorial defense force, a planned military reserve component of the regular military, since 2015. Roughly, 20,000 guards will join the ranks of the new force in 2017.

Warsaw plans to increase the size of the army by at least 50 percent in the coming years (from about 95,000 to 150,000), including the creation of three brigades for the territorial defense of the country on the eastern flank.

The military is going through long-term modernization program with significant equipment acquisitions planned for 2017 through 2022 to involve new air defense systems, ballistic missiles, a new fighter trainer aircraft, combat and transport helicopters, submarines, self-propelled howitzers and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Around 1200 UAVs are to be procured, including at least 1000 with combat capabilities.

According to NATO plans, Poland will host rapid response troops starting this year. Warsaw has demanded a full-scale permanent base of the alliance on its territory.

A NATO Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense site to be positioned in Poland in 2018 and the AGM-158B are two destabilizing factors that undermine security in Europe and obstruct prospects for arms control. Both threats to peace come from Poland.

There are reasons to believe that 2017 will be the year when tensions in the Old Continent are reduced. The Russian Foreign Ministry has just confirmed this view in a statement. The BMD and the AGM-158B are the issues to be raised if Russia and NATO launch arms control talks as some leading European nations have suggested recently. But Poland seems to be marching out of step. The JASSM-ER deal is a highly provocative step towards Russia undermining the security of Europe and positioning Poland at the frontline of the arms race.

Revisiting the gold market’s “London bias”

Asian Metals Market Update: Jan-9-2017

China could try and regulate bitcoins. Chinese are using bitcoins to get over the foreign exchange outflow curbs. Bitcoins are attracting short term speculative interest away from gold and silver. In the long term gold and silver are still a better investment than most commodities. At current prices the long term down side risk is limited to twenty percent with chances of over hundred percent rises over the next two years. To those who intend to invest in gold and silver, one word to caution, the pace of rise and fall over the next two years can cause stomach ulcers.

Yuan Is Crashing (Again)

Posted: 08 Jan 2017 07:52 PM PST

The volatility in the Chinese currency has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. After exploding 21 handles stronger in the biggest PBOC-engineered short-squeeze in history - erasing the entire post-election sell-off - offshore Yuan is now collapsing once again, down 350 pips tonight (and over 10 big figures from Thursday's highs). While interbank rates have calmed down, the rush to exit the currency has not...

The last two days are the biggest drop in offshore Yuan since Aug 2015's devaluation... as PBOC weakens its fix by the most sine June 2016.

Pushing historical volatility to its highest since the Aug 2015 devaluation...

For some context, this level of volatility is over 10 standard deviations away from the pre-Aug 2015 norms.

Notably the moves accelerate afterPBOC Advisor Fan Gang told Bloomberg TV...

  • *PBOC WANTS TO SEE FX RESERVES REDUCE SMOOTHLY, GRADUALLY: FAN
  • *CHINA POLICY MAKERS NOT LIKELY GO FURTHER ON OUTFLOW CURBS: FAN
  • *YUAN OVERVALUED IN PAST 3-4 YEARS AGAINST DOLLAR: FAN
  • *CHINA POLICY MAKERS NOT LIKELY TO DROP INTERVENTION: FAN
  • *USE OF YUAN HAS INCREASED DESPITE RECENT DEPRECIATION: FAN
  • *CHINA NEEDS LESS FX RESERVE AFTER YUAN'S INCLUSION IN SDR: FAN

Which was followed by the state-run Global Times newspaper says in an English-language editorial, saying that the Chinese people will demand its government to “take revenge” if Donald Trump reneges on the one-China policy after becoming U.S. President.

Gold Price US$700? OR US$7000?

Posted: 08 Jan 2017 06:18 PM PST

Does either of the above preclude the other?  In other words, if we expect gold to reach $7000 per ounce, and we are correct, does that mean that we can’t reasonably expect gold to go as low as $700 per ounce? Conversely, if we are predicting or expecting gold to continue its current decline, and even breach $1000 per ounce on the downside, can $7000 per ounce, or anything even remotely close to that number, be a reasonable possibility?

Lawrie Williams: Bullion dealers that colluded with U.S. in 1974 have changed ownership

Posted: 08 Jan 2017 06:48 AM PST

9:50a ET Sunday, January 8, 2017

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

The London bullion dealers that colluded with the U.S. government in establishing the gold futures market for price suppression in 1974 have changed ownership since then, market analyst Lawrie Williams noted yesterday.

Williams, who does commentary for one of the bullion dealers cited in a cable from the U.S. embassy in London detailing that collusion, writes that the cited dealers no longer "exist in their original form nowadays, and, except perhaps for Mocatta's successor, can no longer be considered part of any grouping that exerts any significant effect on the gold price today."

GATA's dispatch last week about the cable is posted here:

Williams' response is posted at his blog here:

Canadian Government Issues Key Water License
for Seabridge Gold's KSM Project in British Columbia

Company Announcement
Monday, November 21, 2016

TORONTO -- Seabridge Gold Inc. (TSX: SEA) (NYSE:SA) announced today it has received a license from the Government of Canada required for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the water storage facility and associated ancillary water works at its 100 percent-owned KSM Project in northwestern British Columbia.

The license, as authorized within the International Rivers Improvement Act, regulates all structures and activities situated on transboundary waters shared with the United States that have the potential to affect water quality and quantity. The Water storage facility and its ancillary water works (water diversion ditches and tunnels) are the primary water management control systems for the KSM Project. These facilities separate water that has not contacted mined material from so-called contact water originating from disturbed areas of the mine site and then contain the contact water prior to treatment and eventual release to the receiving environment.

These facilities are situated on Mitchell and Sulphurets creeks, tributaries of the transboundary Unuk River system that flows into Alaska. The license was granted for a term of 25 years under the International Rivers Improvements Regulations as administered by Environment and Climate Change Canada. ...

A painless path to publishing on Amazon

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 05:42 PM PST

You've written hundreds of articles on markets, gold, government, and perhaps monetary theory.  You've hammered politicians and economists with merciless logic and unflagging scholarship.  Some of your writings are more valuable than gold, but where are they now?  Scattered, that's where.
Why not put the best ones in one place: A book.  Make that two books.

For writers who have yet to publish a book and would like to, this brief article will show you step-by-step how to get it done.  It's easy.

Yes, easy.

Briefly, what you'll do is create a word processing file then duplicate it.  You'll use one file for a Kindle ebook, the other for a paperback.

For the Kindle eBook, you'll use your word processor to create an ePub file.  For the print version, you'll change the document dimensions to fit Amazon's 6" x 9" paperback format, then save it from your word processor as a PDF.

You'll then go to https://kdp.amazon.com, if necessary register, then go through three steps for each book to put them up for sale on Amazon's site.   You've already done the hard part by creating the content.

Your books will need a cover, and you can create your own or use Amazon's hand-holding Cover Creator, which you'll see during step two of the three-step process.

You'll upload the ePub to create the Kindle version and the PDF for the print edition.

That's it.  Amazon will email you when they're live and available for purchase on Amazon's site, usually within a few hours of completing the three-step process.

Manuscript preparation

(In what follows I'm referencing MS Word for Mac 2011 version 14.4.5 and Apple Pages version 6.0.5.  Some details may differ depending on your version.)

To create a good reader experience it's important to get your word processing files formatted consistent with Amazon's requirements.  It is, as they say, a piece of cake.  Let me show you:

1.  Crank up your word processor and prepare your manuscript.  Keep it as vanilla as possible — no fancy fonts or drop caps.  You're marketing thoughts, not typefaces.  If you're gathering articles already written, you'll copy and paste until they're all home in one place.  Otherwise, write as you normally would, keeping in mind that the sections you want to appear in an active table of contents for Kindle editions should have paragraph style titles rather than ordinary text titles.

Here's what I mean.  Below, I've typed the text then applied paragraph style Heading 2 to the title of a chapter:

Chapter One:  They all laughed

So, for example, if you have 12 chapters in your book, each chapter title would have the Heading 2 style.  Your word processor (Word or Pages) will incorporate all chapter titles as entries in the table of contents.

2.  Create an active table of contents.  Create a new page at the beginning of your manuscript by inserting a page break at the top of your first page.  Then on the blank page:

Apple Pages: Insert —> Table of Contents —> Document

MS Word: Document elements —> Table of Contents

In our example, all 12 chapter titles would appear magically in the table of contents — because you've applied paragraph styles to each title in the body of your manuscript.  With an active table of contents you can click on a chapter title and jump directly to the actual chapter.  Test it, you'll see.  It's neat.

3.  Add a page break at the end of each chapter.

4.  All images should be inline, not floating.  Select each image, then:

Apple Pages: Format —> Arrange —> Text wrap —> inline with text

MS Word: Format picture —> Position —> Inline with text

If the image is a picture make sure it's high-resolution.

Important: Insert images into your document, rather than copying and pasting.

5 . Do not include headers or footers.   You will use this file to create a Kindle version, which doesn't support headers or footers.

6.  Finish writing the manuscript and make sure it's as clean as possible — no misspellings, omitted words, etc.  If you use hyperlinks test them to make sure they're accurate.  I think it's a good idea to put them in an end notes section, using superscripts in the body to reference them.

For help strengthening your writing, even for powerhouse authors, see my little book, Write like they're your last words (paperback & Kindle).

7.  Add the usual book front matter.  In your manuscript add at minimum a title page and copyright page.  You might also wish to add a dedication page and another page listing books you've published, honors received, k

Bullion Star 'infographic' on gold ETFs shows how they undermine the gold price

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 01:03 PM PST

4:03p ET Wednesday, January 4, 2017

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

Bullion Star today has posted an interesting "infographic" about exchange-traded gold funds and its main point seems to be to remind investors that when they buy shares in gold ETFs, they are facilitating the fractional-reserve gold banking system -- that is, facilitating the artificial inflation of the gold supply, making gold seem more plentiful than it is and thus undermining the gold price. The Bullion Star "infographic" is here:
